What Is Botox? Our Downtown San Diego Chiropractors Explain

Botox is a safe and effective medical treatment for wrinkles and fine lines on your skin. The medication is derived (strangely enough) from bacteria that causes botulism and is is applied directly to specific facial muscles via injections. Don't worry--Botox injections won't cause you get botulism! Instead, they work to smooth out wrinkles by blocking nerve signals that are normally sent to the muscles of your face. This decreases facial muscle activity and promotes a smoother, more youthful appearance by reducing the "squeezing" of the muscles around your eyes, forehead, and mouth that otherwise produce the most common types of wrinkles--from Crow's feet to brow lines to frown lines. Our downtown San Diego chiropractors and nurse practitioner have seen impressive results for our patients after even just one treatment.

At Gaslamp Chiropractic, we have a nurse practitioner on staff who is licensed and certified to provide Botox and other medical treatments that rejuvenate and revitalize your skin, including Juvederm, Voluma, and chemical peels. Here's what to expect when you come to our Downtown San Diego clinic for Botox injections:

  • A thorough health history assessment by our nurse practitioner to rule out any contraindications and to make sure you're healthy enough to receive Botox injections
  • A clean, comfortable, and confidential environment for your treatment
  • A safe, effective, and efficient injection applied to one or more areas on your face that target pesky wrinkles and fine lines

Most of our patients from Gaslamp District, Downtown San Diego, Little Italy, Marina, and East Village notice an improvement in the appearance of their skin within a few days, with the best effects noted after about 2 to 6 weeks. It's interesting to note that Botox injections have been used medically (not just cosmetically) for decades in the treatment of various other conditions including severe muscle spasms, severe underarm sweating, overactive bladder syndrome, and even severe migraine headaches.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Botox Injections?

Botox injections are incredibly effective and safe, however results are temporary. Most of our patients notice that after about 3 months, the effects of their Botox treatment wears off, and they often choose to reschedule another appointment.

Certain people may not be ideal candidates for Botox injections, including people with heart disease, breathing problems, bleeding disorders, and certain autoimmune and/or neurological disorders like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease) and myasthenia gravis.

Like any medical procedure, cosmetic use of Botox injections should always be provided by a trained and licensed healthcare professional to help reduce the risk of complications. You may notice mild side effects in the days or weeks following your Botox injection, including muscle weakness, dry mouth, headache, blurry vision, cold or flu-like symptoms, and redness or swelling at the injection site. If any of these side effects persist, or if you notice any rare but potentially severe adverse reactions--including chest pain, difficulty breathing, hoarse voice, or significant swelling and pain, especially in an area not injected with Botox--you should call your doctor right away.

It's important to remember that virtually any procedure carries at least some risk, and that our interdisciplinary staff does everything it takes to ensure that your experience with Botox injections goes smoothly--no pun intended!
